This paper describes an automatic method for forming electromechanical equivalent for use in transient stability studies. Pre-fault and post-fault load flow together with a topological search determine the size of the detailed system of each disturbance. Two system reduction and an equivalents. No information from previous transient studies of the system is required. The results of simulations using equivalent developed by this method agree well with those of detailed simulations.
